Emerging Questions

A while ago, I attended a conference in Seattle called Emergence. The conference was designed to be like listening in on the conversation of a number of pastors of emerging churches. The conference stemmed from the book Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches. Four of the five authors and church leaders were at the Seattle conference: Mark Driscoll, Dan Kimball, Doug Pagitt, and Karen Ward. They formed a very diverse group both in personality and in theology, so the conversation was extremely interesting to me. The Christian buzzword of "emerging church" brings up such a diversity of perceptions and reactions that a conference that addresses some of the questions and puts to rest some misconceptions was enlightening.

The Emergence conference is happening in a number of locations, with different moderators and speakers. The conference in Austin, TX is happening in October. I regularly read Dan Kimball's blog, and on a recent post he asked if there were any questions people had regarding the theology and practice of the emerging church. I really value Dan's insights and wisdom (and sweet haircut) so I built up the courage to ask a few questions that came to mind after reading the book (and thinking way too much).
  • How would the emerging church movement translate into other cultures? Is this a primarily Western church movement, or would this relate well in other countries?
  • What are some of the theological "red flags" that could come from emerging theology? Christian history is made up of theological pendulum swings, with the theological focus swinging from one important concept to another. What are some of the potential imbalances that could come from focusing on one facet, while missing another?
  • Where do you see the emerging church theology and practice in 20 years?
These stem from my overly-curious mind. You can read those questions here, as well as ask your own. I would love to hear any ideas or answers to the above questions, so feel free to join the conversation.

What are some of the questions you have about emerging church theology and practices? Write any questions in the comments section below, and definitely check out Dan's blog and church.
