I Heart The Swell Season

Last night, Katie and I enjoyed the company of a few friends from church--Mark and Candace, Matt and Adrienne, Jake and Rilie, Jeremy and Grace--and went to see Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova perform as The Swell Season. I believe that Phoenix was their first stop on their new tour, so it made for an fulfilling and enjoyable concert.

Glen and Marketa are incredibly humble musicians. They were quite shy, actually. I think the Orpheum Theater (which, by the way, is one of the coolest theaters I've ever been in) was a large show for these indie Oscar-winners. Hansard made all sorts of amusingly awkward comments throughout the night, unintentionally winning the audience's hearts. I think they perform because they genuinely love music. There wasn't a fame or look-at-me motivation to their performance; they seemed to simply love creating music together.

A few highlights: Calexico opened for them. I have heard of, but never really listened to, Calexico's music until last night. And when Glen Hansard came out, he played two songs completely unplugged in a giant theater. I mean, no mic, no amps, no band,  just him standing there with an acoustic guitar, belting out music at the top of his lungs for the silent audience's pleasure. Brilliant stuff. Their music is powerful and authentic and touches something deep in the human spirit.

  1. Great review! Just caught The Swell Season last night in Portland and they were fantastic. Different opener, though. Posted a review at - check it out.
