Our First Day in Paris

Sacre Coeur (this is my postcard-worthy photo)
Arc de Triomphe
Joel and Katie (and the Eiffel Tower)

I love the film Amelie. It's lighthearted, whimsical, and full of life. And it was filmed in the neighborhood where Katie and I currently reside in Paris--Montemarte. We didn't really plan for this; it's just one of those cool things that happen. Below is the cafe Amelie works at (The Two Windmills) and the market she shops at with the mean owner and kind-yet-simple clerk.

Anyway, we spent our first day in Paris walking. Just walking. We tried to blend in with the Parisians, doing our best to not act in typical American fashion. We walked from Montemarte down through some of the major streets in Paris, all the way to the Arc de Triomphe, then on to Champs-Elysees (where we ate at McDonald's), then all the way back to the Eiffel Tower (didn't climb it, we're waiting for better weather; it was windy and drizzling most of the day). We took a break, then climbed up to Sacre Coeur, which is only a few blocks away (also in Amelie, when she sends her love interest on a scavenger hunt up the long stairs). Sacre Coeur is quite impressive; it's a huge Roman Catholic church that sits on the highest point in Paris, which makes for a remarkable view. Overall, I'm guessing we walked nearly 10 miles today. Tomorrow, we're headed to the Louvre!

My wife is currently very sick with some sneezing/sore throat/dying-on-the-inside disease at the moment, so we tried to take some time to rest and relax today. I still love her lots, even as she coughs next to me in our tiny French hotel room. Pray that she feels better soon!
