Academy Award Nominations Reflections

The Oscar nominations are here!

Things I Like: Slumdog Millionaire is getting recognized with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Soundtrack, and Best Adapted Screenplay. I'm also very glad that Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) was nominated for Best Actor, Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) for Best Actress, and Viola Davis (Doubt) for Best Supporting Actress. And you've gotta love that Robert Downey Jr. got nominated for being the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude in Tropic Thunder. Hooray for little movies getting recognized!

Things That Are Lame: The Dark Knight, Gran Torino, and WALL-E were pretty much snubbed. I was hoping WALL-E would get a Best Picture nomination and Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) a Best Director nom. No nom for Best Soundtrack for Hans Zimmer's excellent work for The Dark Knight. No nom for Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins for Happy-Go-Lucky. Let The Right One In wasn't even considered for Best Foreign Film. And is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button really that good? I enjoyed it, but is it worth 13 nominations and likely the Best Picture win?

(Also, is anyone tired of having either Kate Winslet or Cate Blanchett nominated for an Oscar every year since they started acting? They're both incredible, but they get one every year.)

Now I'm going to have to watch The Reader, Revolutionary Road, Milk, and Frost/Nixon, I suppose.

I've been on a quest to watch every single Best Picture winner for a few years now, and I'm down to only two left (Sunrise and Cavalcade). If Slumdog Millionaire or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button win it this year, then I won't have to pay for another movie ticket!

  1. You know how I feel about Slumdog ... and I was thrilled.

And that's all I have to say about that. :)

  2. Ah, I just finished posting my predictions. Holy poop, what a tough year for guessing. I share all of the same thoughts as you, but really surprised at the lack of more The Wrestler nominations.

  4. Cam, I just saw The Wrestler today, and it was excellent. Review coming Monday.

Jason, what specifically was it about Benjamin Button that you liked? Because I found it emotionally void, despite the visuals.

    Lori, :)
