Advent Conspiracy: This is Love

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4:9-11)

The kind of love I see here, the kind of love that Jesus embodies, is unrequited, sacrificial, redemptive, and contagious.

For Advent Conspiracy, the junior high students have been raising funds to build a freshwater well in Mukigando, Uganda through Know.Think.Act. They have given of themselves financially so that people they don't even know can have clean water. They've raised so much money that we're over our goal. So we're also giving mosquito nets to communities in order to prevent the spread of Malaria.

Not only have they been giving financially, but relationships have grown deeper within the group. Students reluctant to leave the social margins have grown in their relationships. Small groups of students worked together to achieve a common goal. Even people not part of our church are being changed; a neighbor of one student came into my office to ask how she could help and give. She had heard this girl's excitement about giving of herself at Christmas and wanted to join in.

Unrequited, sacrificial, redemptive, and contagious love. I love seeing the kingdom of God break into the lives of junior highers. It's the best kind of Christmas present.

  1. Thanks for your post. I love hearing stories of hope like this about the younger generation. My wife & I have worked with street kids off & on & through our church - not always such happy stories, but it's nice to hear about kids that are going down the right path.
