Whose Light Anyway?

"I am the light of the world." - John 8:12

"You are the light of the world." - Matthew 5:14

So which is it?

Ah, Jesus and your paradoxes. First, You call Yourself the light of the world (twice, actually), but then give Your followers the label too. In You is the light of life, rescuing us from a kingdom of darkness and revealing that God is light. Without Jesus, we're walking in darkness and ignorance. So how can we be the light of the world?

Perhaps the true light of Christ shines in and through His followers, that we're conduits for His love and grace and truth. Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 5 that people will give the Father glory for our good works, that our light is meant to point people to the God of light and not to ourselves. Our light can only shine through the grace Jesus gives us anyway. I can't be light on my own; I need Jesus to be the light in me.

If we're the lightbulbs, then Jesus is the electricity.

In Christ, you're the light of the world. How brightly are you shining today?

Thank you, Joel. What in excellent reminder of our duty as christians. I was thinking about light today because it was cloudy... A couple of verses I came across that I'd like to share
He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Psalm 37:6
God once said, "Let the light shine out of the darkness!" This is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts by letting us know the glory of God that is in the face of Christ.
    2 Corinthians 4:6
    Thanx again, A Vanderlans
