Following Jesus - Mark Riddle

This is part of a blog series on discipleship. I asked a number of youth ministry and church voices to share their answers to these two questions: 1) What is discipleship? and 2) What is the greatest barrier to discipleship we're facing in youth ministry?

From Mark Riddle

The greatest barrier to discipleship we're facing in youth ministry is us.  We are the greatest barrier when we think the barrier is something or someone out there beyond our control.  We are the greatest barrier when we blame others for being a barrier to discipleship but fail to see how our decisions, thinking, and successes have contributed to the problems we see.

There is no other place to start except with ourselves by the way we contribute to the problems we see.

Then we can only invite others to join us in recognizing our barrierishness. (just made that word up!)

We are the barriers to discipleship. Change must start and end with us changing ourselves.

This is your invitation.

Mark Riddle is a youth ministry consultant and writer. He coined the phrase barrierishness.
