The Basic Bio

Joel Mayward is a pastor-theologian and film scholar-critic. The author of three books, including "Jesus Goes to the Movies: The Youth Ministry Film Guide," he has written about film and theology for Christianity Today, Think Christian, Bright Wall/Dark Room, Christ and Pop Culture, Fuller Studio, Youth Worker Journal, and Immerse Journal. He's also been published in the peer-reviewed journals, Theology, Journal of Youth and TheologyJournal of Religion & Film, and HorizonsHe is currently a PhD candidate at the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts (ITIA) at the University of St Andrews, where he also serves as Associate Editor for ITIA's online journal, Transpositions. Joel has been serving in professional pastoral ministry since 2006 in churches in Oregon, Arizona, and British Columbia. A member of the Online Film Critics Society and Interfilm, as well as being a Rotten Tomatoes "Tomatometer-approved critic," Joel's film reviews and essays can be found at www.cinemayward.com. My fourth book is an academic monograph, Theology and the Cinema of Christopher Nolan: Transcendence, Time and Narrative (Lexington Books/Fortress Academic), forthcoming in 2022.

PhD candidate at the Institute for Theology, Imagination, and the Arts of the Divinity School of the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Graduate of Multnomah University (BS, Biblical Studies, Youth Ministry) and Portland Seminary (MA, Theological Studies). Member of the American Academy of Religion, the Online Film Critics Society, and INTERFILM.
